History of the Department

History of the Department

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), one of the core engineering disciplines, represents a rapidly advancing field that forms the foundation of modern technology. The primary objective of the program is to equip students with a strong understanding of electronics, communication systems, and related technologies.

The department was established in 2009 with an initial intake of 60 students for the B.Tech program. Due to steady growth and increasing demand, the intake was enhanced to 120 in 2010 and 180 in 2012. In the same year, the department introduced the M.Tech program in Embedded Systems with an intake of 24 students.

Over the years, the department has earned several national and international recognitions, further strengthening its reputation for academic excellence. It has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for four consecutive terms – 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025 – reflecting its commitment to maintaining quality education and standards.

The department demonstrates a strong research culture, having received over ₹1 crore in funded projects from prestigious government agencies such as DST, SERB, and AICTE. It has also been granted support five times for organizing Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) and Short-Term Training Programs (STTPs), reinforcing its dedication to research, innovation, and professional development.

The department is a recognized Research Centre under Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and will offer Ph.D. programs in ECE from 2025. With technology evolving rapidly, ECE has become a crucial discipline across industries, requiring strong analytical and problem-solving skills along with expertise in mathematics, computing, and electronics.

The B.Tech program emphasizes four key areas — circuits and systems, signal processing, computing, and communication — and offers a wide range of courses in IoT, Embedded Systems, VLSI, robotics, automation, microelectronics, and communications. The department provides access to advanced tools and facilities such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, PSpice, Xilinx, Cadence, Ansys HFSS, and DSP boards, ensuring hands-on exposure to real-world engineering applications.

The department consistently maintains a 90% placement rate, with an average starting salary of ₹5 LPA and the highest package reaching ₹24 LPA. Faculty members possess expertise in VLSI and ASIC design, embedded systems, wireless communications, IoT, and signal & image processing. Teaching is enhanced through lectures, presentations, MOOCs, minor/honour courses, and video-based learning.

With well-equipped laboratories in electronics, communications, microprocessors, DSP, antennas, and VLSI design, the department promotes experiential learning, encouraging students to “learn by doing” and preparing them as innovative, industry-ready engineers through its AICTE-approved M.Tech in Embedded Systems program.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is offering GATE coaching for B.Tech students to help them excel in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. This initiative aims to strengthen students’ technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and exam preparedness, enhancing their chances of securing admissions to top postgraduate programs and pursuing rewarding career opportunities.
